Using C.D.s and the C.D. Player

Monday 18th April 2011

Music and Movement is something we do often in babies’ room. The children love to move around and dance to the music. We have a large collection of children’s c.ds that we play on our c.d. player. The children love music with a fast moving beat. Hi5 is really popular and so are the Wiggles. I have noticed that the children will only dance to the music with fast moving beats as opposed to slow songs. We also use our c.d. player for songs and rhymes at mat time. For example we use the magnetic story “Five little men in flying saucers” and play the song on the c.d. at the same time. Another time of the day that we use the c.d. player is at sleep time. We have a sleep time c.d. that we play every day which helps the children go to sleep.

I never realised how much we rely on our c.ds and c.d. player for music and movement. It has only just occurred to me that with this technology our children wouldn’t be able to listen to music in our room. None of the teachers in my room can play an instrument so without c.ds music would not be in our daily routine. Children learn so much through music.

Channon and Jensen (2009) believe that children learn through music and movement. They recognise that moving to music develops co-ordination through the use of gross motor and fine motor movements. They go on to say that music is good for developing language and literacy. The actions that are used in songs help children to understand what the words in the song mean. This is very important for under two year olds as they are only beginning to develop their language skills.

Wright (2003) also recognises the importance of moving to music. She states “Children enjoy discovering what their bodies can do and experimenting with moving different parts in new and varied ways” (p. 238). Many of the children in my room are still learning too, or have only just started walking. Providing them with the opportunity to move freely and discover how their bodies move is very important for their physical development.

Using the c.d. player is such an important technology in the babies’ room. Even through the use of a computer we can burn, copy and create c.ds for the children to listen and move to. To extend and develop the children’s interest in my room I will make a c.d. from all of the songs they enjoy dancing and moving to so that the babies move around to their favourite songs.
